Hello viewer!
Come back soon for the ability to get a taste of what it’s like to walk around in a deserted city!
Our city, titled Concrete Jungle, created by Edward Xie and Emily Zhuang is the digital manifestation of what it feels like to be completely alone for the first time in a city designed for millions of people. Surrounded by sky-high skyscrapers with an eerie glow, the distinct lack of movement creates a very ominous environment that us individuals, constantly stimulated by music, conversation, or the social internet, are unaccustomed to. Although you are the only individual in a circle of buildings, you are not the focus of the scene. In the Concrete Jungle, you are aware that you are minuscule in the grand scheme of things. In our world, where buildings are built for our convenience and our days are built around our own needs, we commonly forget that the things we leave on this planet will last far longer than we will, and the Earth has lived many millions of lifespans before humans, and the Earth will live many millions after.
To create this scene, we are implementing toon shading, first-person camera controls, a glow/halo effect, depth of field, in a procedurally modeled city without shape grammar. Ideally, the feeling the scene emits a feeling of loneliness. So, our creative efforts will be focused on exaggerating perspectives and lighting to make you feel even smaller in the scene and selecting an almost metallic and/or glass type of material for the buildings to play up the cold and uninviting qualities of a large, barren city.
